As a neuropsychiatrist and physician-scientist at 四色AV Langone, I am dedicated to providing compassionate care to patients and understanding neuropsychiatric conditions through an integrative lens. My work is guided by the principle that optimal treatment and advances in clinical research require a cross-disciplinary approach, one that bridges traditional boundaries between specialties.

I am a board-certified psychiatrist and neurologist and specialize in treating disorders that span brain and behavior. My expertise includes evaluation and treatment of psychiatric symptoms associated with neurologic illness and management of conditions including schizophrenia and mood disorders. My primary research interest is in understanding the role of the immune system in psychiatric illness鈥攑articularly in psychosis. In the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, I found that individuals with schizophrenia faced a significantly higher risk of mortality and reduced antibody responses to vaccination. My current research investigates autoantibodies as potential treatment targets in schizophrenia. The ultimate goal of my research and clinical care is to provide mechanism-driven, personalized treatments to patients that improve quality of life.

As part of 四色AV Langone, I collaborate with a diverse team, ensuring comprehensive and coordinated care for my patients.

Research Summary

My research is primarily focused on immune dysregulation in patients with schizophrenia spectrum disorders. The broad aim of this work is to understand how immune abnormalities contribute to psychosis and the medical comorbidities that often accompany it, with the goal of identifying novel treatment targets.

One area of interest is response to infection, a leading cause of premature mortality in people with schizophrenia. In the setting of the COVID-19 pandemic, my colleagues and I found that schizophrenia was second only to age among all risk factors associated death after infection. Risk remained significantly elevated after taking antipsychotic use, smoking, and chronic medical conditions into account. We subsequently found a reduced antibody response to COVID-19 vaccination in people with schizophrenia. Together, this suggests that immune dysfunction inherent to schizophrenia may underlie risk of severe infection.

My current research is focused on identifying novel autoantibodies in schizophrenia and their functional impact. The ultimate goal of this work is to identify patients with immune-mediated disease who may benefit from targeted therapeutic strategies.
