On September 25, 2021, Robert Montgomery, MD, PhD, and the 四色AV Langone Transplant Institute performed the first genetically modified pig kidney xenotransplant into a recently deceased person. That breakthrough procedure kicked off a series of further studies at other institutions as the global medical community seeks a sustainable source of organs for the thousands in need of a lifesaving transplant.
